CEO
of Novo Nordisk gets reward |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
Mr Lars Rebien Sørensen, CEO of Novo Nordisk,
gets the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour
At a ceremony at the French Embassy in Copenhagen on September
5th, Lars Rebien Sørensen, CEO of Novo Nordisk, was handed
the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by the French Ambassador.
The decoration rewards someone who has promoted and taken very
favourable decisions for France.
Novo Nordisk has 7 production units in the world of which one
is situated in France, in Chartres, and produces insulin cartouches
for diabetics all over the world. In 2003 Mr Sørensen,
as head of the Group, decided to double the production capacity
at the factory in Chartres, which meant the creation of 500
new jobs.
Mr Sørensen has also accepted to be one of 10 company
executives to testify in the image campaign of France –
a campaign launched in order to promote France to foreign investors
- together with the president of Siemens and General Electric.
The ceremony at the French Embassy in Copenhagen also meant
an opportunity to express France’s gratitude towards Denmark
for good business cooperation.

Novo
Nordisk’s CEO Lars Rebien Sorensen explains
why he can rely on the French |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
 |
You’ve chosen France as a new production site for your
new FlexPen®. Why?
The FlexPen® is the most advanced injection device prefilled
with insulin and will make life easier for millions of people
with diabetes. It is a product that’s crucial to our global
success. So we need to be absolutely sure that when we expanded
production, we could make it work. We’ve been very impressed
by the quality of the labour force we’ve recruited in
France and by the relationships we’ve established with
the local authorities.
What does France offer the foreign investor?
A proven infrastructure and a workforce that’s capable
of manufacturing at the highest quality. It’s given us
total confidence that we can implement large-scale production
without jeopardizing our chain of supply. And France is a big
European country. For us, it’s one of the markets that
matters the most.
But this is the age of globalization. Why aren’t
you manufacturing in a country with lower overheads?
The volume of our business is going up by around 10 percent
a year. Our customers, the people with diabetes, depend on the
insulin we produce. We cannot afford to make mistakes. We have
to be able to depend on the production from our factories. In
France, we can rely on stable production and the highest quality
product.
Do you worry about French labour relations?
No. We’ve never had any labour disputes at our factory
in Chartres. At Novo Nordisk, we believe in respecting the individual.
When people know that they are being respected and that their
input is valued, then they want to work for the company. The
French have responded brilliantly to our way of doing things.

New Study Reveals - Greater Paris Enjoys Best Growth
in Europe
The Paris region is an increasingly attractive location for
international installation projects, according to a study
initiated by "Paris-Ile de France Capitale Economique"
(Chamber of Commerce) and conducted by Ernst & Young on
15 key regions in Europe.
"In 2004, Paris registered the highest growth rate in
Europe in terms of installations" notes Thierry Jacquillat,
the president of the organization. The region doubled its
market share by attracting 21% of the new international set-ups
compared to 10% in 2003. Paris is in the process of catching
up with London (24% of projects in 2004). Barcelona and Moscow
(+8%) share third place.
Paris achieves best performance in the service sector
with a 23% increase in market share in 2004 compared to 10%
in 2003. Paris has consolidated its European leadership in
the software business ( 39% of international set-ups).
In 2004, Paris was the only region that featured
in the top three in terms of installations in both the service
and industrial sectors.
"In contrast to Greater London, Paris has realised the
importance of preserving a dynamic industrial network (especially
automobile and aircraft industries), with very high quality
workforce. Therefore the region continues to attract industrial
investment" explains Thierry Jacquillat
Paris has moved up into second place for attracting company
headquarters, service centres, and research and development
operations. The region now has a market share of
16% compared to 5% in the year 2000. Paris leads in new projects
for R&D centres, mainly in the software and electronics
sectors. However, Greater London further consolidated its
leading position, especially with new arrivals from the U.S.
and India. .
In total, the Paris region employs over 125,000 people in
the field of research and development, that's 40% of France's
total personnel in this field and 7% of Europe's. "It
is a concentration of know-how that it almost unequalled worldwide"
asserts Thierry Jacquillat.
U.S. international companies now represent 38% of the total
number of new arrivals (compared to 46% in 2003). 7% of new
arrivals are German and 6% are Japanese.
